Like many other countries, Vietnam is clearly aware that a radical change in its behavior towards the environment and natural resources is crucial for its sustainable development.

While driving its economy to quick and stable growth, Vietnam has defined the close combination between socioeconomic development and environmental protection, in which the latter is valued as an important criterion to measure its sustainable development.

Accordingly, Vietnam is pursuing a policy to build a “green” economy with less carbon emissions, in which enterprises using much energy and natural resources will be gradually replaced with ones effectively using energy and applying environmentally friendly technology.

At the same time, Vietnam will seek more clean and renewable energy sources to fuel its sustainable development target. The Vietnamese government has already approved the Strategic Orientation for Sustainable Development in Vietnam (Vietnam Agenda 21) including big initiatives that lay a firm legal foundation including big initiatives that lay a firm legal foundation for ministries, agencies, localities, organizations and individuals to take and combine proper action to ensure the country’s sustainable development in the 21^st Century.

However, in order to radically solve environmental and development issues, each country cannot be able to take actions individually. Protecting the environment is a global issue and all countries must be aware of their own responsibilities for the common good of the earth.

The close cooperation between the economies in the East Asian region and the whole world plays an important role boosting the sharing of information and technology to keep, protect and restore the health of the earth’s ecosystem. Especially, the role also goes to support developing countries in building a greener and more sustainable development model.

The 19^th World Economic Forum on East Asia organised in Ho Chi Minh City forms a good opportunity for discussions and tabling new ideas to build a green economy for not only the East Asia region, but also for the world. This event is also a rendezvous point for countries to cement their cooperation to solve global challenges regarding the environment and climate change.

Hopefully, this publication will partly contribute to that common effort.
